Description:

Hemp can give a great alternative to concrete and wood. The hurds or the fiber of the hemp plant can be made into Hemp Wood. It is very durable because it is 20% stronger than the ordinary wood and it is sure to stand the test of time.

How it’s Made:

The hemp fibers are separated from the hemp plant and pressed into blocks and planks using adhesive to form the hemp wood.(1)

Advantages:

Hemp can be harvested in 120 days after planted. Compared to oak tree, hemp can grow 100 time faster thus making it a quick and easy to produce building material.(2)

Disadvantages:

Supply and demand of hemp wood will cause increase in price.(3)

History:

Hemp has a history in construction. People have used hemp for thousand of years. Hemp fibers was used to build mortar for bridge abutments by Roman engineers.(4)

Looking to the Future:

The wood industry has been revolutionized by hemp wood. New jobs have been opened so quickly and transportation costs are lesser compared to the traditional wood. Hemp wood also reduces negative impact on the environment.(5)
