Description:

Hemp fiber is considered to be the highest quality in the world because of its longevity. It is being made into strong ropes that are woven into burlap.

How it’s Made:

Hemp is retted, a process wherein hemp is soak in water so the fibers can easily be separated. Retting is rotting, the result of dew, rain and bacterial action. Then machines are used to mechanically separate the fibers ready for baling.(1)

Advantages:

Hemp fibers having incredible tensile strength is one of the most durable fibers on earth.(2)

Disadvantages:

Machines that separate the hemp fibers to produce hemp products are costly.(3)

History:

Hemp is the earliest plant cultivated for fiber. Hemp being the oldest example of human industry primarily started in ancient China.(4)

Looking to the Future:

Industrial hemp is a very versatile product with many potential uses thus the policy of hemp cultivation is expected to change at the state and federal levels over the coming years.(5)
