Description:

Hemp seeds are the edible seeds found on the Cannabis Sativa plant. Hemp seeds infuses ones diet with a rich source of nutrition and will not cause any intoxication if consumed.

How it’s Made:

Hemp seeds are the seeds of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. They contain only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.(1)

Advantages:

Hemp seeds are staple food as they provide excellent nutritional value and is one of the many superfood worthy of its reputation. Hemp seeds are very rich in healthy fats, high quality protein and several minerals.(2)

Disadvantages:

The seeds ingested may cause mild diarrhea because of its high fat content.(3)

History:

First traces of hemp seeds are found in Asia. Hemp seeds found in Europe, Africa and South America used for oil, pottery and food has been dated back in 8000BC.(4)

Looking to the Future:

Hemp market has the potential for significant growth since consumer demand for organic and natural sustainable products are increasing. It is said to double up in market being a diverse crop and its contribution for seed/oil, fiber and substitute for synthetic medicines. Seed shattering resistance and increasing seed size are being developed. Further research is needed to improve harvest and to continue long term sustainable production and economic vitality.(5)
