Description:
Creating well-built homes have been possible now with hemp fibers as a substitute for woods. Concrete-like blocks that are being used as insulating material for constructions are made with hemp and lime.
How it’s Made:
To make hemp concrete mix together the center of the stock or hemp herds to water and powdered lime stone. Mix it all together and form it in to the wall over time. The chemical reactions between water, lime and hemp will change to stony concretion.(1)
Advantages:
Hempcrete are made of non-toxic building materials. It stores heat which is then released slowly as the building cools down. Hemp also removes carbon from air. It is moisture absorbent thus making it resistant to mold.(2)
Disadvantages:
Builders/Architects lack knowledge or is unfamiliar with hemp concrete. It is not readily available in the market and is expensive. The plant requires heavy fertilizers which leads to negative impact on our ecosystem.(3)
History:
Hemp have a lower carbon footprint than many materials it also dates back to roman times.(4)
Looking to the Future:
Hemp will create innovative and sustainable value chains and has the potential to decarbonize the construction sector.(5)
